Southbound Adventures is a small, family-owned Outdoor Education company with over 30 years of experience delivering exceptional Outdoor Education experiences to school students from Kindergarten through to Year 12, with our core focusing being Years 7 to 10. We specialise in Bronze, Silver, and Gold Duke of Edinburgh Adventurous Journeys, particularly Gold expeditions on the Overland Track in Tasmania!

Position Description: Senior Leader 

Southbound Adventures would like to invite those looking for an exciting, energetic work environment to apply for the permanent Senior Leader position. 

Senior Leaders are responsible for providing support to our Program Director and Group Leader teams while delivering outstanding Outdoor Education Programs. 

This is a dynamic role where flexibility and adaptability are must have qualities, providing the opportunity to work in Group Leader, Activity instructor, Team Leader, Logistics Support and Assistant Director capacities on a broad range of hard top, soft top and journey based Outdoor Education Programs. 

This is also a mentoring role bringing the opportunity to contribute to the skills and development of our permanent and casual team. 

Role Description:
  • Deliver Outdoor Programs with a focus on safety, educational outcomes, efficiency, and fun.
  • Assist the Program Director with ensuring the highest standard of risk management is adhered to.
  • Assist the Human Resources Manager in mentoring Leaders in the field.
  • Assist the Logistics Coordinator in the gear store and office complex.
  • Assist the Operations Manager in preparing for outdoor programs.
  • Assist with the return and logging of gear use on programs.
  • Assist with the efficient completion of logistical tasks. 
This role includes:
  • Being part of a high performing Team. We work hard to deliver the client experience we know we’re capable of.
  • Social Team activities throughout the year, including our Senior Team Day tradition (last year, we flew the team to the Gold Coast for an adventure day, this year we climbed the Sydney Harbour Bridge!).

  • Your Wilderness First Aid recert paid for.
  • All meals and accommodation whilst on program
  • A Wilderness First Aid kit for use on program, maintained by Southbound.
  • Team clothing package. (SPF50+)
  • Permanent part time 0.9 load – equivalent to 4.5 days per week (averaged across 6 months)
  • Accrue Time Off In Lieu (TOIL) that can be used to take paid days off. 
  • Additionally, earn 2 hours overtime per overnight at the applicable overtime rate.
  • 0.8 load – equivalent to 4 days a week (averaged across 26 weeks)
  • A base salary starting at $48,034.75pa(0.8 Part Time, $30.39p/h), plus field loading for full field days which makes an estimated total remuneration of $59,703pa excluding annual leave loading, sick leave and 11.5% superannuation.

  • Opportunities for extended periods of leave during our quiet period in Winter and over the Christmas holidays.
    • Team members have been able to take up to 3 months off in winter and with some planning in advance they can usually be paid for all of it using the Time in Lieu and Annual Leave available to them. Work is still available over this period, it’s just a little quieter than peak season.
    • Over the Christmas holiday period 5 weeks off is also achievable, we’re usually closed for 3 weeks in this period to ensure everyone can take some quality R&R time after a busy season.    
Applicants should display:
  • An enthusiastic attitude to life and work
  • The ability to work alone or in team situations with groups of 10 to 15 clients.
  • A willingness to be a positive role model for students and accompanying staff.
  • The ability to enable students to understand their strengths and acknowledge those of others in order to work in a group situation.
Required Qualifications:
  • Wilderness First Aid (or equivalent)
  • Certificate IV in Outdoor Recreation (or equivalent)
Applicants must hold or be willing to obtain:
  • Current driver’s license or the ability to obtain one
  • As part of our commitment to child safety applicants require a Paid NSW WWCC and National Police check
Desirable:
  • Experience in towing trailers
  • Vertical Rescue Qualifications
  • Experience mentoring/supporting staff
  • Mountain Biking Qualification

Workload: 0.8 Part Time load within the field and the office
