Somersets Chief Instructor Role might be a position for you.
This position is for someone that is looking for adding challenge and a higher level of responsibility to their current instructing role and wanting to help develop both their fellow staff, themselves and Somerset itself.
We are looking for someone who can:
- Be a leader amongst peers
- Deliver a higher-level facilitation
- Encourage the feedback culture
- Mentor staff to a high level
- Assist with the training and assessing program
- Develop and implement projects
- Team culture through planning events
- Foster and encourage safety and reporting
We are looking for folks with 5 years’ experience in the industry. This must include overnight expedition-based work.
A commitment of 18 months is preferred.
Someone who excels at tasks and consistently role models high standards.

This role is predominantly a field position with roughly 50% Group Leading and 50% split between mentoring, activity support, assessing staff competencies and project work.
The good stuff:
- The current hourly base rate is $33.80 +15% incentive = $38.87/hr
- With Overnight allowances, annual leave pay outs and completion bonus you can expect to earn around $76,500 a year, (varies on actual days worked.)
- Approved training/upskilling course costs covered up to $2000
- With a month off at Christmas and a month and a half off over winter to go adventuring
- Fixed-term Leader positions attract annual and personal leave.
- Superannuation payments in accordance with legislation
- We provide; all meals and tent accomm whilst on program; first aid kit and uniform; all required activity and campsite equipment and ongoing training and development.

- Onsite accommodation options are available on a permanent or casual basis.

What Group Leaders require:
- Certificate IV in Outdoor Rec / Leadership, Diploma or Degree in Outdoor Education
- NSW WWCC
- Formal qualifications in canoeing or kayaking, bushwalking & abseil or climbing,
- Remote or Wilderness First Aid (or the ability to acquire)
